The Pasir Ris handyman one Google review calls “a superhero in the far east”

The van gives it away first. Rear doors open on an HDB walkway, shelving packed with tool cases, a trolley and a cable reel laid out on the ground. Less a vehicle, more a workshop that happens to have wheels.

That van is how at least one customer found its owner. “I happened to drive past his van one day and decided to see what he is all about!” writes jean, in a five star Google review from earlier this year. The same review opens with a sentence you rarely see written about a handyman: “Gunther is a superhero in the far east.”

The far east in question is Pasir Ris, out at Singapore’s eastern edge. And the superhero line makes more sense once you read the 40 reviews sitting next to it.

Every repair means finding another contractor

Here is the usual routine for getting things fixed in a flat. The aircon company does aircon. The plumber does pipes. The electrician does lights, and none of them wants to assemble the wardrobe. Each small job means finding someone new and hoping the price quoted in the chat survives the site visit.

If you have ever had a repair quoted from one photo on WhatsApp, then revised at your door, you know why the list of broken things grows faster than it shrinks.

Which is the gap a one-man outfit in Pasir Ris has spent nine years quietly filling.

One number covers the lot

German Maintenance Workshop & Services has been ACRA registered since May 2017, a sole proprietorship run by Gunther out of Pasir Ris Street 12. There is no Facebook page and no Instagram. Online, he amounts to a Google listing and its 40 reviews.

The word workshop sits right there in the registered name, and the van is where it lives: the workshop comes to your block. The listing shows one person doing work you would normally split across four different contractors. Aircon servicing. Leaky pipes and blocked drains. Toilet lighting. Window insect mesh. CCTV mounting. Furniture assembly, from a child’s study desk to a bunk bed. The published hours read open 24 hours, all seven days.

Even the quoting happens in person. “He is super resourceful and knowledgeable, will come down personally to take measurements and give you a reasonable quotation,” writes jean. No estimating off a photo. He comes down and measures before naming a number.

The difference between a patch and a fix

Two things on that listing deserve a closer look.

The first is a photo. A ceiling cassette aircon hangs open with its parts laid out below: face panel, filter, drain pan, fan wheel, grilles, the whole unit stripped down for cleaning. If you have never seen a ceiling aircon in pieces, it is worth a look on its own. That is what a full service involves, and it is work that usually happens with nobody watching.

The second is a review. “Responsive. Professional.” is how J Lee’s five star review opens, before getting specific: “Fixed a leaky pipe in bathroom and pointed out other issues I needed to get fixed. Then helped diagnose and fix a leak in the kitchen which turned out to be a blocked drain outlet which involved dismantling an entire kitchen cabinet.”

Read that twice. The visible problem and the actual problem were two different things, and reaching the real one meant taking a kitchen cabinet apart. A patch stops at the drip. A fix follows it home.

The thinking runs the other way too. “His suggestions has helped me in cost savings and ensured that there was no reduction of quality,” writes justin thirushelvam, five stars. A contractor who points out the cheaper route is not the experience most people brace for.

One drive past the van, one week to done

Back to jean, whose review is the closest thing the listing has to a short story. It starts with the drive past the van and the decision “to see what he is all about!” It lands inside a week: “From contacting him initially to the installation, everything happened over less than a week!” And in between sits the five word summary of the whole listing: “He really does it all!”

jean’s advice to the rest of Pasir Ris reads like something you only write after a genuinely good experience: “Give him a chance with any help you may need, from aircon to pipes, and even insect meshing. If you are not sure if he can do it, just ask him anyway”.

What the reviews keep repeating

Scroll the rest of the listing and the same notes recur, in different hands.

Who calls him, and what it costs

The listing photos answer the first question: family flats, mostly. A child’s ergonomic study desk assembled in a bedroom. A pastel wardrobe system, lilac and mint drawers in place. A pine bunk bed. A whole row of study desks going up at once, flat-pack crates still in the frame.

Then the harder jobs: two CCTV cameras with fresh conduit mounted on an exterior wall, and that dismantled aircon. Suraj Rai’s aircon service came with “a few other handyman tasks we needed around the house” mentioned in the same review, which is roughly how it seems to go: call about one thing, clear the whole list.

On price, there is no rate card to print, because the jobs vary too much for one number. What there is instead is a pattern across the reviews: jean’s “reasonable quotation”, Suraj’s “charges super reasonably”, J Lee’s plain “Very reasonable pricing.” The way to get your own number is the way jean did it: call, and he comes down to measure and quote.

No urgency, just a number

This is where an article like this usually manufactures a reason to hurry, a promotion about to end or a schedule about to close. There is none of that here. Just one man in Pasir Ris with nine years on the register and a 5.0 rating that 40 reviews have not dented. The published hours simply read open 24 hours.
